AAO-HNS Bulletin | Special Edition | January 2021
ENTNET.ORG/BULLETIN AAO-HNS BULLETIN SPECIAL EDITION: 125TH ANNIVERSARY 29 used and cited manuscripts in their content areas. They provide recommendations and options for treatment of common clinical conditions and are a leading source for continuous quality improvement in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The AAO-HNSF has continued to show outstanding leadership in this area, and Dr. Rosenfeld remains integrally involved in this and other research initiatives. After completing his term, Dr. Rosenfeld passed the baton to me, John H. Krouse, MD, PhD, MBA, and I have served as the journal’s seventh Editor in Chief since October 2014. During that time the number of submissions to Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery has continued to grow, surpassing 2,500 manuscripts in 2020. The influence of the journal as measured by its Impact Factor (IF) has grown since 2014 and is currently at its second-highest value of 2.341. The IF reflects the mean number of citations received by published papers over the preceding two years. In addition, in January 2017 the AAO-HNSF launched its gold open access publication, OTO Open, as an alternate venue for publishing cutting-edge research and clinical observations of regional, national, and international interest. OTO Open grew rapidly in 2020 and has now published over 160 papers. During this same timeframe, the AAO- HNSF has continued its leadership in research and quality. In 2015 the AAO- HNSF Board of Directors approved the development of a clinical data registry for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery to allow an organized system of data collection, storage, and dissemination for research and quality reporting. This registry is now operated as Reg-ent SM and integrates a variety of data, including specialty-specific measures and patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) into a powerful platform both for members and industry partners. Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery also launched an important program with the implementation of its Resident Reviewer Development Program in 2016. Along with then Deputy Editor Cecelia E. Schmalbach, MD, MS, we recognized the need to provide education for residents to be successful and accurate peer reviewers, with benefit both to the individual participants and to the journals. This program has graduated over 50 residents since its first class finished in 2017, many of whom have distinguished themselves as “Star Reviewers,” granted to about a dozen reviewers annually for the breadth and quality of their manuscript reviews. This program continues to grow under the leadership of current Deputy Editor, Jennifer J. Shin, MD, SM, expanding to international residency programs over the past year. It has been clear over the past 125 years that support of research and the dissemination of clinical and scientific evidence and experience are core to the mission of the AAO-HNS/F. The leadership of the AAO-HNS/F is dedicated to these critical enterprises, which provide significant value to the membership, to the scientific community, and to the public at large. OTO Journal
